NaNoWriMo 2009 Day 29

Day 29 - 1 day remaining

In baseball you get three strikes and you’re out.
In writing you get as many whacks at the ball as you want
until you finally get a hit.

The bases are loaded... batter up, Nano Writer!

So close to the end - today's word count is 48,333! Will you hit it out of the park or is it time to think about extra innings? Good luck to all our Nano Writers still swinging away! You can do it! Excerpts? Comments? Cracker Jacks? It's all good! Keep writing!

I did it!

I started NaNo 3 days behind thanks to the flu of death, and I've cleared it 2 days early (even though my impetus for clearing it early went away; it was just a matter of pride at that point.)

50K words in 25 days.

I am damn proud of myself. I even like the novel. Shocking!

I crossed the line today! I'm currently at 50158, and I plan to write a bit more before tomorrow's deadline. Then I'm going to forget about it till after Christmas!

Between moving, cleaning, children, plans for upcoming XMas, the fact that I can't hide away from everyone, and just listen to my music and write, I didn't think that I'd do it, but...

NaNo just verified that I have, indeed, broken fifty thousand for the sixth year in a row.

This victory was harder, longer and feels so much better than the last few.

*delurks from the back of the class*

I did it! I've never written anything this long before and I hit 53k today despite losing 6 days to sickness and work-related trauma. I'd be more excited if I was anywhere near actually finishing the story though :) I think I'm just going to keep on writing until I do. It would be nice to have one finished story to my name.

Never mind that I'm only halfway through the story, never mind how much of it has to be edited. NaNo finally let me do what I told myself I was going to do for the past seven years: rewrite my novel from the ground up.

I fell behind after being ahead for a while, but I did about 8,000 words today, bringing my total to 50,097.

...holy crap. After, what? Six years of trying to beat NaNoWriMo, I FINALLY DID IT. (Even if my novel still needs 40,000 more words, I now LAUGH at that number. Laugh, I tell you!)

And why'd I have to hit 50k at such a creepy spot in the story?

"Sex?" I asked. "You're willing to go before the council and defend this proposal if I have sex with you?" I looked him over; he wasn't an unattractive man, physically speaking, but in other ways I found him quite repellant.

"Are you willing to do it?" he asked.

"Yes," I replied without thinking. It seemed so ridiculous and inconsequential; I suppose if he was a stickler for the rules, if he wanted sex, there was only one place to get it from. And if this was the only way to get it from me, then so be it. Thinking of it that way, he was a pretty sad man. Made me feel a little sorry for that level of patheticness, but didn't make me like him any more. "I'll notify the council to assemble so that we'll be able to presenting to them."

"Later," The Father's Eyes said, taking a step closer to me so that we were nearly nose to nose. He circled his arms around my waist; I kissed him, trying to get into it, but not only was the kiss entirely unspectacular, I felt nothing. I closed my eyes, tried to imagine Kabu was here instead of him. Whatever helped.

But it was impossible to convince myself even for a few seconds and for the sake of fantasy that a man with such mechanical motions was Kabu. Instead, I simply compared the two men, and The Father's Eyes was clearly coming up short. Under normal circumstances, I would simply leave, but in this instance, we had an agreement, and if I expected him to hold up his end, I would need to hold up my end, first. At least it would only be this one time. At least, at least, at least, I told myself. Because it was an experience I never intended to duplicate if I could help it.

I wrote the first half of the final chapter today, and I'm just as unsure about what to do with that bittersweet feeling as I was last year this time.. At the beginning of the month, it was all brand new, waiting to be explored and written, and now coming to the end of it it feels like they're old friends that I'm not ready to give up. I can admit it- I don't want to stop writing the story, even if this is the natural end of it.
Looking back, knowing what the story was about and having a few basic ideas for it definitely helped, as did keeping a smaller focus. Instead of writing all sorts of subplots in and getting bogged down with nonessential details, they were simply alluded to. Maybe that's a project for later in the year. *grin*

How has yours been? The protags make any headway with those dark forces? ;D

Thank you!

And thank you for providing some very apposite posts - some of them have really helped on the days I was flagging a bit and wondering why I'd ever thought that Nanowrimo was a good idea.

I know how you feel, as I'm missing the writing :( My protagonists sort of won, but in a way they lost as well - no 'real' happy ending, but I think I'm allergic to those anyway.
