Day 9 - 21 days remaining

In a good story the opponent will push the hero around a great deal,
in fact, the more the better. This builds conflict and forces the hero
to dig deeper to fix the great weakness that's ruining the hero's life.

— John Truby

It’s called the Traveling Shovel of Death and if you aren’t familiar with this specific NaNoWriMo brand of tool, let’s just say that it’s a device that you can use to dig up some dirt to throw into your plot. It’s a killer idea and one you might consider if you feel the need to get your hands dirty and you know where all the bodies are buried. Or could be.

Is that groaning I hear? Come on! It' all good clean pun!

Today’s word count is 15,003! What’s your hero up to today? My MC is about to set a trap to catch a killer and there may be a shovel involved ;-) Questions? Comments? Famous last words? How about: Keep Writing!

Day 8 - 22 days remaining

The relationship between hero and opponent
is the most important relationship in your story.

— John Truby

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The name of the game is conflict, Nano Writer and as we begin the second week it may be worth keeping this in mind if it feels as if your story is slowing down. To rev things up, heat up the relationship between your hero and antagonist and take something from a simmer and an assessing look to a full head-on boil. And just when things seem good and done, turn the heat up again!

Bring the burn, baby! Today’s word count is 13,336! Questions, comments, favorite chilli recipe? Make it hot, Nano Writer! And keep writing!

Day 7 - 23 days remaining

You write that first draft really to see how it's going to come out.

— James A. Michener

So our first week draws to a close and the word count for the day is 11,669! How does everyone’s story progress? Is the hero committed to the grand quest and are you eager to see what happens next? Write on, Nano Writer! Write on!

Today is also the first Back Up Your Novel Day of November and with sincerest apologies to Mr. Geisel…

Do you play in the clouds and drop your novel off in a Box?
Or keep it closer to home, saving all on a stick with some Fox?

Pray tell, Dear Writer, what is your method of choice?
Else weep bitter tears while reading over Mr. Fix-It's invoice.

Questions? Comments? Last word for the week? Mine’s names and I’m off to hopefully add a thousand more… words that is… so keep writing! And back up those files!

Day 6 - 24 days remaining

A writer needs three things, experience, observation, and imagination, any
two of which, at times any one of which, can supply the lack of the others.

— William Faulkner

The dread Second Week looms on the horizon, Nano Writer and when the writing gets harder, sometimes we begin to question whether or not we have what it takes…

Do you think you lack experience? Keep in mind the old adage “write what you know” is giving way to “write what you love.”

Do you feel your characters aren’t working? Grab a notebook and head somewhere where people gather and people watch. Infuse your observations into any characterizations that lack luster. The same can be applied equally well to places and things.

Do you think you lack imagination? It’s doubtful. If you happen to feel uninspired some days, it’s not lack of imagination. Sometimes all you need is to do something fun or relaxing to recharge your enthusiasm.

The important thing is not to give up on yourself or your story! Today’s word count is 10,002! Try writing a little and you might discover that you’ve written a lot… you just need to keep writing!

Day 5 - 25 days remaining

The aim, if reached or not, makes great the life:
try to be Shakespeare, leave the rest to fate!

— Robert Browning

The aim for today, dear Nano Writer, is a word count of 8,335! So leave not the writing to fate but make great the story and write!write!write!

Questions? Excerpts? Favorite Shakespeare quote? For “it is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves." Keep writing!

Day 4 - 26 days remaining

Make everybody fall out of the plane first, and then explain
who they were and why they were in the plane to begin with.

— Nancy Ann Dibble

So the story is begun and Big Things have happened… you’ve hooked your reader with an engaging problem (as an example, falling out of a plane covers this nicely) and now’s the time to share a little more with your reader. Keep in mind the Big Questions while you write on: Who and Why - what, when and where should already have come up in your opening, right? If not, then these too need attention ;-)

Today’s word count is 6,668! If you haven’t yet started Nano Writer, come join the fun! It’s certainly not too late to catch up and all you need is a character with a problem and let mayhem ensue as he or she tries desperately to fix it… or woo it... or beat it...

Questions? Comments? Parachutes? It’s all good, Nano Writer - so keep writing!

Day 3 - 27 days remaining

If you start with a bang, you won't end with a whimper.

— T.S. Eliot

Dream big, think big and start big! Don’t save all the fireworks for later! Now’s the time to have some fun - make some noise and stir up some trouble for your protagonist. Big Trouble - it’s the only way to go!

Today’s word count is 5,001! Questions? Comments? Big ideas to share? Think BIG, Nano Writer… the Big Bad Wolf… Mr. Big... the Big Bang… and Write!Write!Write!

Day 2 - 28 days remaining

Stories that want to be told are not "out there."
They're in you.

— John Truby

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And now’s the time to bring that story out, make it real, word by word. You can do it, Nano Writer! Today’s word count is 3,334.

Questions? Comments? It’s early days! Your story world is still new - have fun! And keep writing!

Day 1 - 29 days remaining

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And so it begins!

And whether pantster or plotter, now is the time to set your characters onto the twisty paths of your imagination that will carry them from desire to achieving their heart’s desire - or not. And in this quest, be sure to offer your hero the best challenges you can to test them and prove their worth of the prize that awaits them.

And so it begins!

Look beyond the words and let the story reveal itself page by page, from your hero’s ordinary world to the world of the extraordinary, of epic battles both outward and solitary within, to embrace the final resolution that resonates with thematic significance of those ideas that have guided your characters to this great final shining moment.

So it begins! Let’s go! Today’s word count is 1,667 words. Write, Nano Writer, write!
