To the list of writing software, I would add Liquid Story Binder, which is what I use - really good for organizing, editing, etc. and packed with a variety of tools in a really tiny package. Best of all, it fits on a flash drive, so it can be carried about wherever you go during NaNo.

Yes, LSB, despite its high learning curve, is fantastic! I used it for my last NaNoWriMo novel. On my flash drive, my novel went everywhere with me. And I love how versatile it is - I had all of my character bios, timelines and story outline right at my fingertips!

There have also been a number of discussions on the mailing list recently about how different people use the software and all the different files, which could help newer people with the learning curve, I think.
