Yay for switching to the November account! Hmm... gotta get my proper default icon uploaded.

This is a super interesting question, and for once I'm kind of at a loss. And I think part of that's because John isn't interested in describing his world, but on the other hand, this is something I need to think about, since I'm going to need to understand the ways in which he is an unreliable narrator.

Very thoughtful insight! Even if we write our stories from a 1st POV or 3rd Limited, our characters still live in the world even if they're "focused" and may miss the obvious clues. For me, I try to take on an impartial observer role when I write my scenes as well as trying in live in my character's head... definitely headache territory ;-)
