NaNoWriMo 2012 - Day 2

Day 2 - 28 days remaining

The maker of a sentence launches out into the
infinite and builds a road into Chaos and old Night.

Today's word count is 3,334! And because it's Friday, let's talk about backing up those words... It's not too early to think about it, Nano Writer! So what's your method of choice? Flash drive? Cloud drive? E-mail? Make it a habit now and you'll never have to worry about losing your work!

Questions? Comments? Excerpts to share? It's all good! So keep writing!

Ooh, back-ups, definitely! I use dropbox - that's a cloud thing, right? And I gmail each day's writing to my GF (and her to me) so that there's an extra copy floating around. And it's a nice break to read someone else's Nano at the end of the day.

I love my flash-drive. I haven't loaded my story onto it yet, but considering I've gotten over 5k words on it I probably should. I hope I can keep it going that strong on Friday.

I've got mine on a USB stick. I'm using uWriter, which has built-in autobackups and manual backups. I have just done a manual back-up, and it will do another one (probably) when I close it down for the night. BECAUSE REDUNDANCY IS BEAUTIFUL. <3

Also, I have discovered today that werewolf Lore doesn't just refer to my werewolves' shared consciousness/knowledge, but also to an astral-like realm they can travel to in spirit. And they have their own naming system and language! I did not know this before! I will have to get [personal profile] drumdreams to post about it and flesh out my notes on werewolf Lore. (Because world-building via role-playing is epic fun.)

How do we upload our Word doc into the NaNo site? I went to the UPDATE WORD COUNT but mine doesn't appear to have anything except EXERPT.

I use Scrivener, and then manually back-up to a memory stick. I was going to use Dropbox, but the Scrivener site said that Dropbox sometimes re-orders your files & folders according to it's own rules, and that can disrupt the way Scrivener works, so it's good for backups but can cause problems if your try to work off of those files.

Oh, I also wanted to point you at a wonderful series of posts I just found on the Guardian website, How To Write A Novel In 30 Days. This is the first post, which links to worksheets you can use to help you with the process:

And my perennial favourite, How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words A Day To 10,000 Words A Day:

Today has been an okay day regarding words written: I had the whole day off and expected some decent writing to take place, but I only managed 2,560 so far, bringing me to a total of 4,828 (4,856 according to NaNo's validator).

I did, however, spend a good portion of time writing up future scenes: this whole "becoming a registered trainer and get your first pokemon" is taking up a lot more words than I expected -- almost 5k in and my main character has passed her exam, gotten her trainer card, and got a "starter pack" of items from her father (who works at Silph Co., the company that makes all the stuff). I've got three scenes planned out, including one rather long one, so those should do me for tomorrow. I'm hoping -- fingers crossed -- I can get to at least 10k by the end of the weekend as that'll put me at an average of 2.5k words a day.

As for back-ups, I've been emailing it to myself every day so far, so I have daily records of what I've written (all with subject titles so I can easily see which is the most recent version, although I am currently on v3 as I emailed myself yesterday morning and again at about 5). I'm not worried about keeping it private as it's fanfiction.

5200!

I back up my projects to DropBox, and in the event that fails, my main computer is hooked up to a TimeMachine backup (I'm a Mac girl) so it gets backed up hourly that way.

Here it is 11:40pm on Friday and I am up to 7k. It was really hard to get into writing at all today, but after making myself work for it a little while it got a lot better and I still came out to over 1,667. I think I might keep writing a bit through more of the evening but at least I didn't let it slide as a no-writing day.

I was hoping to write another 5k but it just wasn't going to happen. Tomorrow should be better since the NaNoWriMo group meets.

Had a really hard time getting started today. I didn't hit my groove until like 9PM (thank heaven for the #antidiogenes chatroom!) and barely squeaked past 3334 at 11:47. I think I was 50 words up at midnight.

Show me not to take advantage of post-midnight writing time! So at this rate I'm just barely on track for 50k, and rather behind for 75k, but it's early days yet, and I'm chancing up the early sections to make it both easier and less boring to write. After all, if it's baring to write, it'll be boring to read! So hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Excerpt:
He was mad, and I barely knew him, but he was brilliant and he had cured my limp and I already knew that I needed him. I needed him, and I couldn't let this unassuming cabbie kill him.

I took the gun from my waistband, lined up the shot, and squeezed the trigger. I didn't wait to see if I had made the shot--I knew I had. I got the hell out of there.
