When you are describing,
A shape, or sound, or tint;
Don't state the matter plainly,
But put it in a hint;
And learn to look at all things,
With a sort of mental squint.
~ Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll)

Is it time for a little word padding, Nano Writer?
For myself, I don't think of it as "word padding" but rather exposition and description, something that is necessary for a well-told story to come alive for the reader.
Of course, deciding how much description is required and what writing falls into the category of "purple prose" or excessive verbiage is a matter of debate and certainly at the discretion of the writer - at least for the story's first draft.
I say that if you're falling a little short or just need to warm up a bit before getting back into the thick of things, write a bit of description or back story! You never know - you might uncover a fascinating new aspect for your character or setting or even an exciting new plot twist - and you will never know, until you write it!
So Nano Writer, today's word count is 28,333! How is everyone doing today? Excerpts, comments, questions, a bit of purple prose? It's all good!
And as always - keep writing!
