You can't tell any kind of a story without having some kind of a theme, something to say between the lines.

- Robert Wise

Theme, the bane of many a middle school student writing a paper on "The Old Man and the Sea." Okay, time to make theme work for us, Nano Writer! How's that? you ask? Come this way... )

Tomorrow, we'll look at how to spin today's theme into our story's premise. Until then Nano Writer, keep writing!

I have been a reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy for a long time, since I was 11 or 12 I think,
so I understand it and I'm not at all surprised that readers of the genre might enjoy my books.

So still looking for an idea or having problems getting anywhere with the one you have, Nano Writer? Then why not start by thinking about what you like as a reader? )

Tomorrow we'll take a look at what we really want to say by considering theme. Until then, keep writing Nano Writer!

Now's a good time to update your author page. The forums have been re-booted and are back all shiny and new. For me, I have my eye on that new noveling pen in the Letters and Light store (a great "half-way there" prize). Fellow NaNo veterans, any other advice (fun stuff/need-to-know stuff) that you like to share?

And here's a little preview for tomorrow's topic:

Consider the following statement from An Introduction to Genre Theory by Daniel Chandler:
One pleasure may simply be the recognition of the features of a particular genre because of our familiarity with it. Recognition of what is likely to be important (and what is not), derived from our knowledge of the genre, is necessary in order to follow a plot.
Do you enjoy reading stories of a particular genre? What genre elements do you look for or expect as a reader? Do you write in a particular genre? Do you consider what your reader's expectations may be when you select a genre to write in?

Tomorrow: Expectations, Genre, and You! Until then Nano Writer, keeping writing!

There are 31 Days until the start of NaNoWriMo!

Are you ready to write, Nano Writer?

(A) Yes, of course! I've been writing character
spreadsheets since February...
(B) No, no way..... already? How many days?
(C) ........NaNo-what?..... Wrimo-who?.........

If you've selected "B" or "C" (Both? Really?) Nano Writer, fear not and read on for a glimpse into our FAST START for NANO (no trademark pending) that we'll be running all October, a series of lean and mean exercises to get you in writing shape. It all starts here )

And for all you "A" people (you know who you are): carry on! We'll meet you at the starter's gate on November 1! Better yet, check out the FAST START posts beginning October 4 and offer a word or two of advice and encouragement to your fellow writers as we get ready to write this year's NaNo novel... in 31 days!
