Camp NaNoWriMo, April Edition!

Greetings and Felicitations Nano Writers!




Just a quick note to make sure that everyone knows about the changes the OLL (Office of Letters and Light) have enacted over the last several months:

1. Due to low participation numbers, Script Frenzy is no more. Instead, movie/TV/stage scripts and manuscripts have been added as a genre choice for Camp NaNoWriMo.



2. Camp NaNoWriMo is now scheduled to take place during the months of April and July this year (2013) featuring “flexible word count goals.”



3. So in case you missed it: Camp NaNoWriMo - the April version - is starting up in 11 days! Cabins are in the process of being assigned now… so if you do plan to sign up, be sure to fill out your cabin request form.

As April will be a very busy month for me, I’ll probably only post a weekly countdown reminder for our Nano Writer Campers. As always, the forum will be open for member posting (until November 1). So let us know how your writing projects are coming along: NNWM novel rewrites, your plans for Camp NNWM or your preparations for NNWM 2013!

Since the minimum number of word count is now 10k, I'm doing Camp NaNo next month. It'll probably be fanfic. It's my first time doing it and I've been assigned a cabin too, so I look forward to the experience.

That's great! I'm sticking with script writing and working on an adaptation of one of my old NNWM novels that has been waiting too long for a re-look. For scripts, the suggestion is 20K (the old word count before they converted to the industry standard of page count) but mileage may vary as they say ;-)

Cabins can be fun! Some of your cabin mates may be very supportive and others might be pretty quiet (in my experience). I hope you have a wonderful experience!

April is an unusually busy month for me, so I don't think I'll be managing this session of Camp NaNoWriMo, but I'll be aiming for July!

I'm joining, but I'll be rebelling this April. :-) Plans are to edit an old NaNo novel.

Yeah! Sounds like a great plan to me! Seems many a published novel was polished over one or two NaNo sessions! You're in good company :-)

I am superexcited already! I was one of those few people who participated in Script Frenzy every year, but for Camp NaNo I'm going with a novella project. CAN'T WAIT!!

Fantastic! I'm very happy that OLL opened up Camp NNWM to other kinds of writing projects - it adds a new sense of excitement and adventure I think :-)

Quick question: do we have to set our word count up front? I want to be ambitious but I am also very aware of how rl can interfere!

As I can't find any specific word about it, my best guess is that you need to specify a word count (10K - 999,999!) as part of setting up your writing project to register for camp. The "target" progress meter is calibrated by percentage for camp this month which I suspect is automatically calculated from your target word count.

What you might do to hedge your bet is set your word count for 10K and if RL and your muse is cooperative, keep writing! But I know many writers need the incentive to do their writing when other more enticing distractions are at hand ;-)

Does anybody have a more official answer?

One of the help threads mentioned that you can scale your wordcount up during the month, yes. So if you initially set it at 10k, you can change it to 20k if you're on a roll, et cetera. Not sure about scaling it down.
