We could probably win more often if we were willing to deploy
seasoned personnel and equip them with sufficient carrots and sticks.

Several Nano Writers recommend wooing the muse’s favor by offering a small prize for help with daily writing goals:

  • reading/writing e-mails
  • phoning a friend
  • a TV show
  • reading a chapter or two of a book or fanfic

Meeting weekly goals might earn more substantial rewards (a new pen or pencil, paperback book, tickets to a movie, etc.). Additionally, these prizes could be wrapped and stacked, displayed prominently for “super carrot” appeal for when writer’s block hits hard (often during the second or third week).

What kind of prizes and surprises do you use Nano Writer, to appease the mute muse? Tell us about what works for you!

I have a jar of Ghirardelli hot chocolate mix. The super hardcore kind that makes a cup of hot chocolate taste like pure liquid bliss. Every week, if I meet my goals, I can have that.
