So I have a (loose) plot, a reason for things happening (mostly, it's incidental to $protagonist's self-discovery - this is a Man v Self or Man v Society more than it is a Man v Man plot), and a climactic final battle (because I like climactic final battles)...

...but I still haven't named $protagonist, and for a variety of reasons I can't reuse the name I used the first time I used this basic plot idea. Sigh.

She's a half-orc raised by orcs, but I don't want to go with a Tolkien orc name, if for no other reason than my orcs aren't strictly evil or corrupted elves, there being no elves in that world anyway.

I'm thinking Anyitak or Sirikat. Ideas?

I think both are good choices but I would give a slight preference to Sirikat as it might yield more nicknames (if that's culturally appropriate).

Just curious - why go with "orcs" if your people aren't evil (from wiki: supposedly from "orcneas" or related to the offspring of Cain)?

Well, I don't really feel like renaming the race, at least not during November, since the physical appearance and intelligence are that of D&D orcs. (The 2003 iteration of this character was initially a D&D character herself; this iteration is a few steps removed, because, among other things, I'm not using the D&D alignment grid, just chaotic/neutral/lawful, so her initial impetus for leaving is not "because she's CN rather than CE" anymore.)

You're right to go with the name - it should make writing easier as you have a good mental picture of the race. I was just worried that eventually you might confuse your reader familiar with Tolkien's or (in your case) D&D's common application of the name. But that comes later after the rough draft ;-)
